Law8 AI and Harvey,compared.

Harvey and Law8 AI both bring generative AI into legal work, but they start from different ideas. Harvey is an AI workspace that works alongside a firm's existing systems. Law8 AI is a case management platform with practice specific AI built into the matter record.

Two different starting points

Most legal AI products answer one of two questions. The first is how to give lawyers a capable AI assistant that can work across all of their documents and research. The second is how to put AI inside the system where the firm already runs its matters, so that the AI knows the matter, the practice area and the deadlines without being told. Harvey is the best known answer to the first question. Law8 AI is built around the second.

What Harvey is

Harvey was founded in 2022 and is used by many large law firms and corporate legal teams. Its public materials describe four main parts:

  • Assistant. Drafting, questions and answers, and editing of Word documents.
  • Vault. Secure storage and bulk analysis of large document sets, with review tables and citations.
  • Workflow agents. Prebuilt and firm built agents that run multistep legal tasks.
  • Knowledge. Research across legal, regulatory and tax sources.

Harvey describes itself as multi model by design and has offered models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google since 2025. It runs as a cloud service and connects to the document management systems and file storage a firm already uses. It is not a case management system: matters, calendars and deadlines stay in the firm's other software.

What Law8 AI is

Law8 AI is a case management and workspace platform. Matters, clients, documents, calendar, tasks and team chat sit in one workspace, governed by role and matter level permissions, with an audit trail of what was done, when and by whom. The AI works inside that workspace:

  • Record assistant. Answers from the firm's own matter records, scoped to one practice workspace.
  • Document AI. Files uploads to the right matter and flags what is missing for that matter type.
  • Drafting. First drafts from the firm's templates, populated from the matter and queued for attorney review.
  • Practice AI. Tools and logic that change with the selected Practice Module, described below.

Law8 AI can run on the firm's own servers, managed by ProofGuard AI, or in a hybrid deployment. Nothing is sent or filed without attorney review. Law8 AI is released market by market: the Taiwan edition is available, Japan, South Korea and Singapore editions are in development, and Law8 AI America is being prepared for U.S. practice.

Practice Modules: the AI changes with the practice

Law8 AI has eight Practice Modules. They are not eight products and not eight copies of the same chatbot. Selecting a module changes the legal context, system instructions, workflow logic, available tools, retrieval behavior, terminology, deterministic rules and structured output the AI works with. The matter record, navigation and team stay the same.

  • Corporate Law. The AI reads contracts for structure, terms, obligations, changes and risk: contract review and summaries, version comparison, clause and obligation extraction, and detection of changed or missing clauses.
  • Civil Litigation. The AI works as a litigation analysis assistant: judgment and citation research, supporting and adverse authority, argument analysis, case chronology, evidence comparison and contradiction detection.
  • Criminal Defense. The AI tests the defense position against the record and the likely prosecution case: unsupported assumptions, evidentiary gaps, contradictions and counterarguments.

A lawyer who moves from a share purchase agreement to a contract dispute does not start a new chat or open a different product. Switching from Corporate Law to Civil Litigation switches the tools, the research approach and the output format to suit litigation. Civil Litigation, Criminal Defense and Corporate Law are the priority AI engines today. The other five modules (Intellectual Property and Patents, Real Estate, Family and Inheritance, Employment and Labor, and Financial Law) provide full workspaces, with their specialized AI workflows in development.

Several models, one matter record

Law8 AI is built as a multiple model system. No single model is best at every legal task, so each Practice Module routes its work to the model, tool or deterministic rule suited to it. Routine parsing, extraction and rule checks can run on local infrastructure where the deployment is configured for it. Tasks that need deeper reasoning or legal research use the model or service suited to that task, and receive only the information the authorized task requires.

Because the Practice Module sets the context, the same selection that changes the tools also changes how each task is routed. The lawyer chooses the practice area; the system changes gear. Harvey also uses models from several providers. The practical difference is what decides how they are used: in Law8 AI, the practice area of the matter.

Which fits your firm

Harvey suits firms, often large ones, that want a broad AI workspace over the systems they already have, extensive research sources and bulk analysis of large document sets across many matters.

Law8 AI suits firms that want case management and AI in one place, AI whose behavior follows the practice area of each matter, deployment on their own servers or in a hybrid setup, and an edition built for the legal terminology and court procedure of their market. The two are not mutually exclusive: an AI workspace and a case management platform play different roles, and some firms will use both.

Summary

Harvey and Law8 AI are both serious legal AI platforms with different centers of gravity. Harvey centers on the AI workspace. Law8 AI centers on the matter, and changes its tools, logic and model routing with each Practice Module. The right choice depends on where a firm wants its AI to live.
